Webmaking 101

I'm so lucky as a woman to live in this day and age with all of its possibilities and opportunities. The main one for me being the internet. But so far I haven't taken advantage of any of it. In fact so far I've been pretty damn lazy and stupid about the whole thing. I have to ask myself why, at 28, I'm working in a low paid menial job and putting up with strangers treating me badly because I need the next week's pay packet to pay the bills. I'm not stupid so I don't know how I managed to work my way into this dead end.

I'm going to stop sitting around wondering about it and start changing direction. I've seen a lot of girls online who make a living out of blogging about things they love by selling advertising space on their blog. I'm not just talking about sticking a Google Adsense snippet of code in their website. But by having a specific subject area or even ambiance to their blog and recording the number of visitors to the page. They can then approach specific companies who are in line with what they already blog about and pitch an advertising space to them.

People are already doing it and making a living out of it. I want to do it. I want to be in charge of my own time. I need to acquire a lot of skills I don't currently have but I'm going to start with web design. I tried and failed to study web design a few years back at university. The course wasn't well made. It had a lot of irrelevant content. But more importantly I lacked the drive and vision needed to put in the amount of effort it takes to learn something new.

All the information I need is already on the internet and in books. I don't need to pay for a course. I have found a free online course provided by Mozilla (the makers of Firefox). The first step was writing the blog post and I'm really glad I did. I didn't even realise I thought all this stuff until I started writing it down.
